Sarah Canfield’s “Reverb: Imagining the Invisible” Solo Art Exhibition Opens in October

The Mueller Gallery at Caldwell University is excited to present “Reverb: Imagining the Invisible”, a solo exhibition featuring multidisciplinary artist Sarah Canfield.
The exhibition will be held from Tuesday, Oct. 24 to Saturday, Dec. 2. An artist’s talk will take place at the Mueller Gallery on Tuesday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Utilizing the visual tension between photorealism and abstraction, Canfield’s work investigates dissonances between the technological and natural worlds. Her body of work spans a wide range of media, including collage, painting, pastel, wall-hung sculpture and video projections. “Using a variety of techniques offers me a means to speak in multiple visual languages at once,” said Canfield. “These languages are tools in my drive to create ambiguous visual environments that reverberate between reality and illusion.”
The fusion of natural and artificial images in her work is an echo of and commentary on the growing encroachment of technology into the ever-fading natural world. The depth of her sculptural work speaks to how deeply embedded technology has become in today’s world and reflects her ongoing fascination with the ever-evolving human relationship with the machine.

Benjamin Fernandez ’24, a senior and studio art major, and assistant to Caldwell University Mueller Gallery director Suzanne Kammin Baron, says, “Sarah Canfield’s dynamic and captivating pieces draw viewers into a time warp where the digital assimilates with the natural. Perhaps her multidimensional hybrid environments present a glimpse of what is yet to come.”
Sarah Canfield is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, collage, photography, mixed media and sculpture. She has exhibited extensively in various venues, such as the New Jersey State Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Morris Museum, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, the Pennsylvania State Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum, the Noyes Museum and the Google corporate offices in Manhattan. She received her B.F.A. in Painting, cum laude, from Alfred University in Alfred, New York. She is an instructor at the Montclair Art Museum and Union College. Her studio is located at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, New Jersey. Sarah received project grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and she is the recipient of a 2022 Fellowship in Painting from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
