Joanna Garcia: HOME SWEET HOLE
ARTIST STATEMENT
Ever since I was a little girl, it’s been a family tradition to stop midway from driving if a tax or garage sale sign was spotted. You could say thrifting unique items is in my blood. I would and still do inspect these quirky home objects with fascination and wonder how they could be useful or transformed. As I grew older, I have come to realize that these homey objects hold the truth of what goes on inside a home. At first glance, these objects alone invoke a sense of nostalgia, pretty and quaint. If the viewer keeps looking, they will see my modifications, my artistic flair that uses these objects to tell a story, a story that one may relate to. I will use color, composition, scale, texture, and the arrangement of objects with abstract visuals to tell these stories. They are inanimate objects, but they are also witnesses to the harsh realities people may experience behind closed doors. My desire is to take these objects that are unable to speak and transform them so that they can reveal a glimpse of darker family truths.
