Hunter Arevalo: BECOMING
ARTIST STATEMENT
Throughout my entire art career, I’ve always been fascinated with the relationship between color and light. The way a simple object like an apple can contain countless subtle colors beyond your basic red. Our consciousness and experiences are informed by the incredible array of vibrant hues that create our world. Recently, I’ve begun exploring color as a metaphor for the vibrancy of lived experiences and as a symbol to represent the Queer community.
BECOMING is an art exhibition born from years of learning, growing, and accepting myself as part of the Queer community. A crucial part of creating this body of work was realizing that many of my experiences have been informed by this part of my identity. Inspired by contemporary artists such as Jenna Gribbon, Janet Fish, and Kehinde Wiley, BECOMING explores how identity and experience come together both personally and universally.
