Nature can be an incredible source of inspiration. In addition to my faith and love for classical depictions of the Madonna and Child, nature has been a beautiful source of inspiration through my many hikes into the wilderness, and, through my work, I communicate just how interconnected motherhood is to nature, and vice versa. All six of my pieces speak to my themes of motherhood and the various seasons of change and growth that can occur throughout one’s life.
My four paintings focus on the mother herself; the woman brings up her little girl who then goes on to bring up her own little girl. The series of paintings ends with a prompting from the original mother who now lay beneath a sheet of ice. It is up to the viewer to determine what the burgundy rose represents for them. Lastly, for my two drawings, I represent the possible outcome of good (ideal) motherhood, and in my second drawing, I show the possible outcome of bad (unideal) motherhood. Both are meant to be representations of either the internal joy and freedom one gains from knowing that they were loved or the internal anguish one feels from a lack of love and freedom.
