Brittany Santos: The Invisible

ARTIST STATEMENT

I don’t know exactly what invisible force pulled me into choosing plexiglass but I remember the first time I used it. It was in my color theory class where I decided to use plexiglass as my canvas. I wanted my art to go on a wall and look like it belonged there. It’s clear like glass while less fragile and a lot more stubborn. A challenge I was happy to fight when making my art. Making something difficult look effortless and elegant was my goal when creating my art. Color would be whatever the environment was and movement would be my full focus. Appreciating the clarity and “happy accidents” that came along the way as I fought with this smooth but hard material. Layering or cracking the plexiglass was my way of mark making trying to keep it as close to the original state as possible.

We all have emotions that none of us can truly see or touch making them seem invisible. But we do feel them and sometimes they can weigh down on us creating pressure that only makes them real. This was the aftermath of my art once I finished because the process was always more important than the destination when creating it.
