University Establishes Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Beloved Professor, Alvin Neiman

Leonardo da Vinci wrote, “As a well spent day brings happy sleep, a life well used brings happy death.”

Caldwell University accounting professor Alvin M. Neiman, who tragically died while driving with his wife earlier this year, brought so much happiness to students and colleagues with his caring manner and inquisitive nature. He was a loving husband and nurturing father and grandfather. A scholar, teacher and mentor.

Professor Neiman’s door was always open for students. His mind was always open for new thoughts and new ideas, and his focus and his depth of field were amazing. He represented – and practiced – in the field of accounting with vigor. Truly, his love for Caldwell was boundless. Professor Neiman helped the academic and professional careers of so many Caldwell students and graduates through his advice and warm support, and many of his peer professors had become equally as indebted to him.

In tribute to his life and the relationship between the family and the University, Professor Neiman’s memorial service was held before a capacity crowd in Alumni Theatre on campus. Three overflow rooms were filled to the brim for a live stream of the service.

The University received several hundred gifts from former students, accounting industry colleagues, family friends and those in Neiman’s network down the shore. Thanks to them, and to the support of the Neiman Family, Caldwell was able to begin awarding a scholarship to a student right away.  “It was the life of goodness, the witness of compassion, the belief in every individual student’s ability to succeed, and the profound professional and personal encounters that led people to respond with generosity in recognizing the authenticity of Professor Al Neiman,” said Sister Kathleen Tuite, O.P., assistant to the President for mission integration. “ When someone leaves that kind of mark on your life, you want to give it back and pass it on. As the Prophet Isaiah states, ‘Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest forever.’ Thank you, Professor Neiman, for lighting the way,” said Sister. 🟥
