The exhibition “Light & Color: The Art of Judith Croce” will feature approximately 30 works by Art Department faculty member Judith Croce, who died unexpectedly last summer. Croce was a member of the department from 1988 to 2017 and its chair from 1988 to 2000. In her career as a professional artist, she often took a minimalist, nonobjective approach that celebrated subtle color shapes and simplified compositions.
In the studio, however, Croce was an intrepid seeker and this exhibition will present works in a variety of media including oils, gouache, encaustic (wax and pigment), and most recently, cut paper wall installations. In an updated artist statement, Croce wrote, ”My work is the search for light and color ….. [my] paintings move between structure and play, order and accident, the deliberate and the random, in an attempt to create a harmony of color …..”
