SOAR Services
The Caldwell University SOAR program offers the following services which students may utilize in any combination based upon their unique needs:
Time Management – SOAR students work one-on-one with the SOAR staff to develop and implement an individualized schedule each semester. Schedules consider both school, work and personal responsibilities as well as social activities and self care.
Organization – SOAR students who experience concerns related to organization such as keeping track of course materials and turning-in assignments on-time work with the SOAR staff to develop a system of managing their materials in a meaningful manner.
Active Reading and Listening – Strong reading and listening skills are essential to success in college. SOAR students learn strategies to enhance their reading comprehension and understanding of class lectures and discussions.
Note taking – Note taking is an integral part of classroom instruction. As such, SOAR students learn to take organized and meaningful notes that are focused on important course concepts.
Studying – SOAR students acquire key study skills that enable them to manage their study time efficiently and effectively. Additionally, students learn to tailor their preparations to the specific exam structure.
Writing and Math Support – Personalized guidance through the writing process helps SOAR students effectively complete written assignments with clear organized expression of the ideas. Likewise, one-on-one professional and peer tutoring guides students through math computations and calculations.
Self Advocacy – Students work with the SOAR staff to practice self advocacy skills whereby they express and seek support for their concerns and develop meaningful relationships with faculty and peers.
Assertive Communication – SOAR students learn to practice open and clear expression of their thoughts and feelings in both their verbal and written communication with faculty, staff, and peers.
Emotion Regulation – At times, the demands of a college workload can be overwhelming for students, and it’s imperative that they have tools for managing their stress. SOAR students work with the SOAR staff to develop a self care plan. This ensures they have healthy effective tools for relieving their stress both inside and outside the classroom.
Career Readiness – College is a time for career exploration and preparation. SOAR students are offered support throughout the job search process including identifying potential internship and employment opportunities, writing a resume and cover letter, completing applications, and preparing for interviews.
Workshops – SOAR students are invited to take part in monthly hands-on workshops where they’ll have the opportunity to meet other program participants and practice academic and social skills vital to their school success.
SOAR Center – SOAR students have exclusive access to a dedicated space where they are welcome to work or relax anytime. Students can complete exams and assignments in our study area complete with laptops and office supplies, refresh with a drink and treat from our snack bar, or unwind with an activity from our relaxation station.
