Honors Program Classes and Core Substitutions
Honors seminars often count as core or enriched core courses for students who are part of the Honors program. A seminar may have enriched core designation, writing intensive (WI) designation, or it may substitute for the designated departmental core course of the teaching faculty member. For example, if a professor from the English department teaches an Honors seminar, and if the student needs a core literature course, the Honors seminar fulfills the second literature English core requirement. The substitutions are advertised by the co-Directors prior to registration each semester. If a student takes a seminar and has already met the requirement that corresponds to it, the course is credited as an elective. The Honors Project, HP 405, does not count as a core or an enriched core course, but counts toward your general electives.
When registering, Honors should remind their departmental advisors that they are Honors students, and that Honors seminars often meet core and enriched core requirements. After the drop period, if a seminar offers more than one substitution, the student must select one substitution and complete and submit a form to the CARES office.
