Rules and Regulations

The following conditions must be met to earn a minor:

  1. At least 9 credits to be used toward the minor must have been completed at Caldwell University.
  2. At least 50% of the minor must be of unique credit, not used for any other major, core, minor, or concentration requirement.
  3. Students are referred to the individual department or program for specific requirements within that minor.
  4. Only grades of C or higher qualify for satisfying minor requirements.

Minors

A minor is a specialization in an academic area. Minoring can help you gain knowledge or skills in fields distinct from your major. Most minors require a minimum of 18 credits. 

Minors must be completed simultaneously with a Bachelor’s Degree program. A minor may not be completed independently or after a Bachelor’s Degree has already been conferred. Multiple minors may be requested while actively earning a Bachelor’s Degree. All coursework to earn the requested minor(s) must be completed prior to the conferral of the Bachelor’s degree. 

Advising

Minor requirements can be found in the Catalog. However, similar to majors, some minors may require careful sequencing of courses due to pre and co-requisites; and/or may share multiple courses within your major requirements, that could put you at risk of exceeding 50% of unique minor credit. For those reasons, we strongly suggest working with the Chair of the Department offering the minor when making course selections. General questions about minors can be answered by your academic advisor. Be sure to consult both your advisor and the Chair of your requested minor to best incorporate the requirements of your minor(s) with your major requirements, core, etc. 

How do I declare a minor?

Minor Intent forms should be submitted on the Portal under Student Resource Forms. This will allow the Chairperson to know approximately how many students are actively working on the minor to aid them in offering enough sections of each minor required course(s). When you apply for graduation, you must complete the Minor Approval for Graduation Form. Found under Student Resource Forms. Your requested minor will not be awarded until your approval has been received. Approval forms should be submitted in conjunction with your Graduation Application. Minors will be awarded at the same time a Bachelor’s Degree is awarded. It will be noted on your CU transcript, but is not printed on diplomas.

ACCOUNTING MINOR

Students must receive a minimum grade of C in all courses applied to any of the business minor programs.

 

 

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE MINOR

The minor in American Sign Language (ASL) is designed to provide the student with an understanding of ASL and its application. The following courses are required:

APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS MINOR

Practicum in Applied Behavior Analysis

The undergraduate Practicum in ABA is designed for students in any major (or who are undeclared) who would like to gain experience with assessment and interventions used in applied behavior analysis with children with autism spectrum disorder.  Students take 1 credit (ABA 800) and work in the on-campus University Center for Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis (see: https://autism-center.caldwell.edu/ ).  Students are provided with opportunities and supervision to complete all competencies required to take the Registered Behavior Technician® examination of the Behavior Analysis Certification Board®.  See www.bacb.com for additional details.  Prerequisite:  PS 101 General Psychology

Minor in Applied Behavior Analysis

Students enrolled in any undergraduate major (or who are undeclared) may minor in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Students who minor in ABA complete 18 credits, which provide a student with the coursework requirements and supervised fieldwork toward certification as a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst® (BCaBA®) under the 5th edition task list of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. See www.bacb.com for additional certification requirements. Students must attain a grade of C or better in all undergraduate courses applied to the ABA minor. Credits/hours of ABA 800 accrued as part of the Minor in ABA may be used toward the master’s in ABA (and BCBA certification) and students must get a grade of B or better in these graduate courses. Students who want to sit for the BCaBA exam may take ABA 800 Applied Practicum in ABA I (3 credits) to complete the supervised fieldwork required by the BACB. Students who continue on to obtain a master’s degree in ABA (and sit for the BCBA exam) can count these hours toward both the BCaBA and the BCBA certifications.

Combined Minor in Applied Behavior Analysis / MA in Applied Behavior Analysis

Qualified undergraduate students (any major) who are minoring in Applied Behavior Analysis may take advantage of the opportunity to pursue their MA in Applied Behavior Analysis in an accelerated manner through the Combined Minor in ABA/ MA program. It is designed to facilitate the ongoing academic accomplishments of students who have established a record of excellence at the undergraduate level. Acceptance into the program will allow up to 12 credits of the ABA minor to be “double-counted” toward both the Minor in ABA and MA in Applied Behavior Analysis. The student pays undergraduate tuition for graduate courses taken prior to completing the bachelor’s degree, which is awarded upon completion of the bachelor’s requirements.  

Note that the 12 double-counted credits will be designated as “applicable to the graduate degree” only after the student receives the bachelor’s degree and matriculates into the master’s program, which designation will be canceled if the student withdraws from graduate study before completing the master’s program. In that case, Caldwell University will count the credits only towards the student’s undergraduate degree. Note also that grades below B in required graduate-level courses will necessitate that the student retake that course; grades below B in an elective graduate-level course will necessitate that the student either retake the course or take another graduate-level course in substitution. Students will only be permitted to take one graduate course per semester while still an undergraduate (under special circumstances, with permission a student may take two). 

  • Students may apply in the semester prior to the semester during which they intend to begin the combined degree program.
  • Completion of at least 60 undergraduate credits with a minimum 3.5 GPA (this minimum must also be maintained for the remainder of the undergraduate degree completion)
  • Students must declare the minor in ABA before their senior year.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty in Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Personal interview
  • Completed graduate application form

ART DIRECTION MINOR

The Art Direction minor will allow students to gain exposure and experience in highly practical skills both in business and art subjects. Students must complete the following courses in the concentration.

Students who wish to pursue a minor in are must complete 18 credits in studio art.

ART HISTORY MINOR

A minor consists of 18 credits (6 courses) in Art History. A maximum of nine credits (three courses) may be drawn from AH courses used to fulfill other core requirements. Students must obtain a C or better in all classes.

 

 

BIOLOGY MINOR

Students may earn a biology minor by taking at least 18 credits of biology courses. These courses must include General Biology with Lab (BI 101, BI 101L, BI 102 and BI 102L), Physiology (BI 207), and one 300- or 400-level biology course.

All prerequisite requirements must be met. Students must achieve a minimum grade of C (2.0) in the courses applied to the biology minor program.

CHEMISTRY MINOR

Students may earn a minor in chemistry by taking at least 18 credits of chemistry courses. These courses must include General and Organic Chemistry with Lab (CH 111, CH 111L, CH 112, CH 112L, CH 203, CH 203L, CH 204, and CH 204L) and one 300- or 400-level chemistry course.

All prerequisite requirements must be met. Students must achieve a cumulative GPA of C (2.0) in the courses applied to the chemistry minor programs.

CREATIVE WRITING AND PERFORMANCE MINOR

Requirements:

CRIMINAL FORENSICS MINOR

The minor exposes students to diverse areas of forensic study, including forensic psychology, forensic anthropology, and criminalistics. Students will develop a basic familiarity with forensics and an appreciation for this field of study. As a result, they will be better prepared to make an informed decision about pursuing advanced coursework in forensics. Additionally, the minor provides students with a competitive edge in their careers, and accentuates the usefulness of the social, behavioral, and physical sciences in understanding and exploring criminal behavior, solving crimes, and answering legal questions.

Students are required to take SIX courses or 18 credits from the following nine courses:

CRIMINAL JUSTICE MINOR

Students who wish to pursue a minor in criminal justice must complete 18 credits or six courses. These must include CJ 201 Introduction to Criminal Justice, plus a minimum of three CJ courses required for the criminal justice major, and up to two elective courses from the designated list of CJ or SO cluster courses that fulfill requirements for the criminal justice major. For students with a major in sociology and a minor in criminal justice, only three courses may be cross-listed.

HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION MINOR

The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is a multidisciplinary field that combines elements of computer science, psychology, and design. The curriculum focus of this minor includes UI/UX Human Centered Design, Responsible Technology, Cognitive Psychology, Digital Art or Design Theory, Data Analysis, GUI Development/Design, and a relevant elective from CS/PS/AR, totalling 21 credits. This minor will enable students majoring in Computer Science to round out their education with a more human-centric focus; and it will enable students majoring in Psychology and Graphic Design to expand their degrees with relevant technology-focused coursework.

PRE-LAW MINOR

The pre-law minor at Caldwell University is designed to aid students who are planning on attending law school or are interested in a career in law. The course offerings in this 18-credit interdisciplinary minor focus on the skills that the American Bar Association identifies as important to success in the legal profession. These include the ability to think logically, to move beyond description and analyze the relationship between variables, comprehensive reading abilities, and concise writing skills. The minor is administered by the pre-law advisor.

To successfully complete the minor students can choose any six courses from the following list. Students must obtain a C or better in all courses applied to the pre-law minor.

This minor explores theories and issues surrounding social justice and cultural awareness. More specifically, through team-taught, interdisciplinary courses as well as discipline specific courses, students will study social justice and various cultures to foster a greater understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion. The courses in this minor will study individual experiences and diverse voices to examine institutions and structures of power. Students who wish to pursue a minor in sociology must complete 18 credits or six courses. These must include: SO 101 Introduction to Sociology, plus any other five courses with an SO prefix (SO 200 Writing can not be used for the Sociology minor). For students with a major in criminal justice and a minor in sociology, only three courses may be cross-listed.
