Caldwell College Enters Collaborative Program with Seton Hall University to Offer Master of Science in Athletic Training

Caldwell College has partnered with Seton Hall University to offer a combined (dual degree program) Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT). Students will have the opportunity to study for three years at Caldwell College and two years at Seton Hall University in the School of Health and Medical Sciences. . Students can complete both degrees in five years rather than six, thereby saving time and money.

Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletic administrators, coaches and parents. More than 70 percent of certified athletic trainers hold at least a master's degree.

"This dual degree collaborative program provides an exciting opportunity for Caldwell College students to continue their education at the graduate level and become a member of this growing health care profession," said Dr. Sook Choi, Caldwell College Professor of Biology and Premedical Advisor.

According to Carolyn Goeckel, M.A., ATC, Chair of Seton Hall's Department of Athletic Training, "students involved in the collaborative program have a unique opportunity to develop a strong foundational knowledge at Caldwell College which is further expanded and nurtured during the professional athletic training phase at Seton Hall University. The opportunity among the faculty for shared professional expertise creates an exciting environment for faculty from both institutions and enhances the students' educational experience and transformation from student to healthcare professional. Receiving a Bachelor's degree in Biology and a Master's degree in Athletic Training provides the graduate with a competitive advantage in today's market. The combined degree prepares the graduate to offer the highest quality of professional services and care to a varied patient population and the public at large."

The dual program will prepare future athletic trainers to provide patients with services and education for injury prevention, evaluation of athletic trauma, immediate care and rehabilitation. Upon completion of the program graduates will be prepared to critically analyze and convey information to patients, colleagues and other health professionals. They will also be able to provide a broad range of patient care services and perform research and administrative responsibilities.

Upon completion of the MSAT program, the student will be thoroughly prepared for the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification Examination.
