Bernard O’Rourke, Associate Dean, Division of Business at Caldwell College, was recently named one of the nation’s top 100 education professionals of Irish descent. The honor was awarded by the Irish Voice newspaper, in conjunction with its sister publication Irish American Magazine.
The first annual “Irish Education 100” joins other lists of top Irish professionals in business, law, and finance, also awarded by the Irish Voice. Irish America and Irish Voice Publisher Niall O’Dowd explains that the newest list was created “to begin to quantify the Irish commitment to excellence in education in the United States.” In an October 8th article published on IrishCentral.com, O’Dowd continues, “We are indeed proud that we have been able to identify and acknowledge so many Irish who have put such extraordinary effort into educating generations of Americans from coast to coast.”
Born in Dublin and raised in Co. Monaghan, O’Rourke moved to the United States in 1975. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University College, Dublin and a MBA degree from Fordham University. He completed his Barrister-at-Law degree at King’s Inn, Dublin and was admitted to the Bar of the Irish Supreme Court in 1972. He served for many years as an elected member of school boards in New Jersey including terms as president of the both Essex Fells and West Essex Regional boards of education. O’Rourke is a director of the North Essex Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the U.S. At Caldwell College, he also chairs the college’s Business Advisory Council. In May 2009, he was elected to serve a two-year term as President of the New Jersey Collegiate Business Administration Association.
O’Rourke accepted his award at the American Irish Historical Society in New York City on October 8, 2009. His fellow honorees were college administrators and trustees from colleges around the country, including Harvard, Columbia, Georgetown, Loyola, and New York University.
